¡Poder! Youth Advisory Boards x GBTQ Latinx Men

What is the Current State of Young Latinx GBTQ Men's Health?

Young Latinx gay, bisexual, trans, and queer men ages 13-24 generally receive poor quality of care, disingenuous support, and hostile educational environments due to stigma, lack of youth-serving professionals’ competence, and societal insensitivity. Moreso, they endure intersectional (racial, social, political, economic) health disparities that have only intensified due to COVID-19.

What is One Solution?

¡Poder!: The Power of Young Latinx Gay, Bisexual, Queer and Trans (GBTQ) Men through Youth-Adult Partnerships seeks to support 5 Youth-Serving Organizations (YSOs) to develop health-centered youth advisory boards that authentically support young Latinx GBTQ men ages 13-24 living with or impacted by HIV. Through no less than two years of training and technical assistance support, the organizations will be equipped with tools to authentically partner with young Latinx GBTQ men living with or impacted by HIV, and ultimately create and/or strengthen existing safer spaces. Furthermore, the creation of health-centered youth-advisory boards will support the redressing of homophobia and transphobia within the local Latinx community through organization-driven events and activities that highlight the importance of family and peer acceptance.

What are the incentives for YSOs selected?

- $5,000 to support their participation and development of the health-centered youth advisory board
- Participation in a learning community composed of other YSOs developing and/or improving their health-centered youth advisory board
- Social media content support to increase empathy and reduce community stigma experienced by young Latinx GBTQ men
- Access to tailored technical assistance and webinars on topics related to Creating Safer Spaces for LGBTQ Youth, Medical Mentorship for Young People Living with HIV, Cultural Responsiveness, and Youth-Adult Partnerships 101
- Participation in a roundtable convening, in 2022, for Project Leads. The status of whether or not the convening will be virtual or in-person is dependent on COVID-19 travel regulations and federal public health guidelines.
- A new and/or strengthened health-centered youth advisory board that includes young Latinx GBTQ men living with or impacted by HIV
