2018 1 in 3 Photography Project

Centering people who have experienced abortion is crucial to the work of ensuring abortion access for all who need it. The 1 in 3 Campaign, a project of Advocates for Youth (a national non-profit which works to ensure young people’s reproductive and sexual health and rights), is sponsoring an artistic photography project with contributors around the United States. The goal is to utilize photography as another medium to elevate people’s stories and shift the cultural conversation around abortion, and the project was inspired by the work of COLOR (Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights).

Photographers will work with one or more abortion storytellers (people who have experienced abortion and are willing to share their story) in their geographic region to capture the subject and their story in the context of where they live and their community through fine art or artistic portrait photography.

Grants from $2000 to $5000 are available for up to ten photographers. The final portraits will be shown in a gallery exhibition in Washington DC and used by college students in campus exhibitions around the nation. Advocates for Youth will pay for printing and framing costs.

Grant recipients will work with up to three abortion storytellers in their region. The 1 in 3 Campaign will connect photographers and storytellers. The photographer will create and submit five final digital portraits of each subject. Advocates for Youth and photographers will share copyright of the material. Advocates for Youth has final decision over what portraits are chosen for the exhibition and retains the right to exhibit the photos for free and share with press as desired.

Youth ages 18-24, LGBTQ people, and people of color are encouraged to apply.
