1in3 Campaign Student Chapter Application 2015

The 1 in 3 Campaign takes its name from the reality that 1 in 3 women in the United States will have an abortion in her lifetime. The campaign aims to destigmatize abortion by creating a new dialogue that puts people at the center of the conversation about abortion rights and access. Advocates for Youth will partner with 20 student organizations on college campuses across the United States to engage in civic and cultural advocacy work to destigmatize abortion and promote access to abortion services. Members of 1 in 3 student chapters will serve as activists, advocates and spokespeople on abortion access in their community and around the country. They will also be the leaders in carrying out some of our most notable national events such as our 1 in 3 Abortion Speakout and Out of Silence play.

Advocates for Youth will provide selected 1 in 3 Campaign Student Chapters with advocacy and media training, ongoing technical support, campaign supplies, and seed grants each semester for related campus events. Other in person trainings will also be available throughout the year. Advocates for Youth also invites a select number of 1 in 3 student activists to the Urban Retreat (September 17th - 21st), our annual youth organizing conference. 1 in 3 representatives from selected groups will receive a scholarship to cover all costs related to attending the Urban Retreat.

The goals of 1 in 3 Campaign Student Chapters are to:

1. Mobilize fellow students to end the culture of shame and stigma that people are made to feel about abortion and work toward building a culture of empathy and support
2. Create a space where people feel comfortable coming forward and sharing their experiences with abortion on campus
3. Increase public awareness and support of abortion access
4. Educate the media on issues related to abortion access
5. Advocate for policies that promote access to abortion on a local and national level

Requirements:

1 in 3 activists must demonstrate the interest, capacity, and resources to organize strategic, meaningful campaign actions on their college campuses.

Applicants interested in becoming a 1 in 3 Campaign Student Chapter must:
- Be part of an existing student organization that wants to take on the 1 in 3 campaign as one if its major projects, Or be interested in starting a new student organizations that will focus its efforts on the 1 in 3 campaign
- Be familiar with the principles of organizing or willing to futher develope organzing skills
- Have the willingness to strengthen your student group's communication skills. This includes the ability to speak to your issues, writing, blogging, and utilizing social media.
- Have a strong framework and analysis of power, privilege, and oppression and the willingness to further your group's understanding of the intersections of reproductive rights and sexual health.
- Be based at a U.S. college or university

1 in 3 student chapters will:

• Conduct at least five screenings, discussions or presentations on the 1 in 3 campaign
• Identify and collect at least three stories for the 1 in 3 website
• Participate in any major 1 in 3 actions
• Organize one large scale event to raise awareness about and/or mobilize support for abortion access, legislation related to reproductive rights, or the campaign itself (this can be part of the 1 in 3 week of action)
• Host the 1 in 3 play, "Out of Silence"
• Collect 500 signatures in support of abortion access
• Participate in monthly conference calls and one-on-one check-ins with Advocates for Youth staff
• Write and submit an article, blog, letter-to-the-editor, or op-ed at least twice a semester
• Submit monthly reports to Advocates' staff
• Must be available to send a member of the organization to attend and fully participate in the September Urban Retreat
